What do you get when you take Steve Coogan, Catherine Keener, Amy Poehler, Elizabeth Shue, David Arquette and a writer of "Team America World Police" and several episodes of "South Park"? Comic genius! Thats what! Hamlet 2 wasn't a laugh out loud until it hurts movie like "The Pineapple Express", but it gets the job accomplished with a lot of subtle humor and hillarious musical numbers in the play (and a few out) that get stuck in your head for hours. For those of you who don't know who Steve Coogan is, he's a British actor and can be found recently portraying the director in the film "Tropic Thunder" which opened three weeks ago. Catherine Keener was most recently seen in "Into the Wild". Amy Poehler has been on "Saturday Night Live" since 2001 and was recently seen as the surrogate mom in "Baby Mama". Elizabeth Shue's appearance here was special and they make that known, I'm not going to say how. David Arquette doesn't say much and maybe that's why he's great. He is like Silent Bob for this film. He just nods when he should. Unlike Kevin Smith's Silent Bob character, David Arquette is really the only weak link in the whole thing.
Steve Coogan plays Dana Marschz a drama teacher who writes stage adaptations of such Hollywood blockbusters for the two students that routinely take drama at his Tucson, Arizona high school. When the schoolboard starts making major cuts, he finds that his class has a new influx of students that wanted to be in other more popular classes that just got the axe. He now has to appeal to them when he gets the news that due to his latest flop, "Erin Brokovich", the drama department is going to be canned. He decides to take action. This action involves Jesus, a time machine, Shakespearian characters and some of the most politically incorrect dialogue you'll hear spoken/sung this year. I thoroughly enjoyed this film and think that if you're not easily offended you will too...see it for the challenge. Remember, The woman that wrote "Team America World Police" with Trey Parker and Matt Stone,Pam Brady wrote it.
