Most guitarists wouldn’t open a show with a song about AIDS unless it were for a charity event. Most comedians wouldn’t open a show with a joke about AIDS because it’s considered “too over-the-top”. Most of those people aren’t singing comedian Stephen Lynch, who has made a living making people laugh at things that normally make them cry. I saw Stephen Lynch on Friday, March 20 at the Lorain Palace Theater. It was a great atmosphere. The crowd before the show was really excited that Stephen Lynch was there. It seemed as if almost everyone had come from somewhere other than Lorain to see him. From the time that I overheard people talking about how they drove to Lorain from four hours away just to see his show because of “how great he was last time they saw him in concert”, I knew I was in for something…a little bit special.”

His crass lyrics and excellent guitar playing electrified the audience, except for the Stephen Lynch hater next to me who kept reminding her boyfriend that “Stephen Lynch was the most disgusting man alive and she wanted to go home!” He even had fun with the audience. Whenever you’re at a concert, it’s almost inevitable that a moron is going to yell out “Free Bird”. What’d he do? He played “Free Bird”…and he played “Stairway to Heaven” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” (not the entire songs).

On his 3 Balloons Tour, he is touring with Rod Cone and David Josefsberg. He and Josefsberg were in “The Wedding Singer” on Broadway together. Lynch played Robbie and was nominated for a Tony Award. David Josefsberg is frequently on Broadway and currently on a break. He has a demo cd out called “A Taste of the Sanchez” with his writing partner Jeff Gurner. Lynch filled in for Gurner on Josefsburg’s songs that were almost as innuendo-riddled as his own. Cone was hillarious when he sang too. As a trio, they did a great job to get the audience involved in the trio’s show.

Stephen Lynch is doing some new things on this tour. He has implemented video into it. The videos work and served their purpose well when they were used. Lynch also played the piano. I didn’t know quite what to expect when he sat down at the pianists’ bench. Now I am proud to say that Stephen Lynch is an excellent singer/guitarist/comedian/pianist…I wonder if he’s got any more tricks hidden up his sleeves? You can find the rest of his tour schedule here.
