Last night was the first night in which Jimmy Fallon sat in the captain’s chair on Late Night. I’m really hoping that everyone watched this, because I want to hear everyone else’s opinion.
In my opinion it was a pretty weak first show. Fallon started off the show with the traditional late night monologue routine, which seemed like it was lacking in something very important…humor. The jokes were pretty poor, and I felt like the audience was laughing just because the sign was instructing them to. Fallon himself didn’t even seem like he was into it, he seemed almost nervous and choppy, like someone who was only 90 percent prepared to give a speech in front of their classmates.
In the few minute spot before the guests, Fallon had audience members lick things for 10 dollars… which was the worst few moments in television. A kid had to lick a lawnmower, a chick licked a copy machine, and a guy licked a fishbowl. No point, not funny, and it wasn’t even gross stuff to lick.
His guests definitely didn’t deliver. Robert De Niro was his first guest, and barely said anything. De Niro didn’t even look at Fallon and was uncooperative with the interviewing process. Fallon kept poking fun at how De Niro isn’t real talkative on talk shows, which I think was a poor choice. Gimmick or not, your first guest not talking to you is a bust.
During De Niro’s segment they showed some dumb skit in which Fallon and De Niro were in a movie together called Space Train or something like that. Another not funny segment.
Justin Timberlake was the second guest, and it wasn’t real special. Fallon and him made fun of John Mayer and the way he sings, which led Timberlake to sing some songs in the fashion of Mayer.
The musical guest was Van Morrison.
The absolute best things about the show were at the beginning when they showed Conan cleaning out his dressing room and talking to Fallon and the Roots.
What did you think?

I thought it was bad, but it was also the first night. I’ll give him a month. Look at the shoes he had to fill in. He still needs to find his niche. Conan had a masturbating bear that stole whatever show he was on and great celebrities. The first celebrity that they got for Jimmy Fallon was Robert DeNiro, who never talks to anyone during interviews. He’s been boring on Leno and Letterman too. The licking thing was horrific. Poor…poor taste. Making fun of another musician, poor taste because one day he might be on the show. Making fun of how a celebrity acts during an interview…poor choice because maybe other actors watch and say “Hey…he’s gonna do that to me if I go on his show.” But, only time will tell.
