Review: The International

Written by Tom / Posted in: ,

"The International" is a film that could have been good or great. It has an excellent premise: An agent played by Clive Owen that works at Interpol: The International Criminal Police Organization has found a conspiracy by a very powerful bank that will tear apart Britain and wants to exploit it. To do so, he teams up with a prosecutor from New York and the unlikely duo follow the trail of paper, bodies and bullet casings through Germany to Italy to New York to Turkey...with a bunch of stops along the way.

That's my first gripe. It was interesting that they kept the story going by constantly moving you from place to place and I have no problem following a story, but when you're moving in a film every ten minutes it becomes a laborious affair. My second gripe is that in one minute this movie is a taut political thriller, then in the blink of an eye the film turns into "Shoot Em' Up 2". There was a lot of suspension of disbelief involved in this film. It is like the director was trying to make both "Clear and Present Danger" and a straight up action film at times. It gives you an hour and 45 minutes of intriguing. Stick around for the other 15 minutes if you want the conclusion that left a bitter taste in my mouth.

Now to the good stuff. Like I said, the story was good...until the fatally flawed ending but I won't go there. All the way throughout the viewing of this film I found myself wanting to find out what was coming next. Who was going to die? Was anything going to get resolved, or were Owen and Watts so knee-deep in conspiracy that there was no way out? The acting by everyone was good, but I wouldn't expect anything less from Clive Owen and Naomi Watts.

2 stars out of 4 for this one. Unless you're a huge Clive Owen or Naomi Watts fan like I am, wait for the DVD or Blu-ray.
