Have you been shelling out cash to see crappy movies? Do you have any idea who Michel Gondry is? He’s the French director of films such as: “Be Kind Rewind”, “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and the music videos for The Chemical Brothers singles from 1993 – 2003. He also directed some of Bjork’s music videos. He came up with an idea after releasing his film “Be Kind Rewind” in which Jack Black’s character, Jerry accidentally erases an entire library of titles at a video store and he and his best friend, Mike played by Mos Def have to re-create every single film. These films receive critical acclaim from the viewers but the re-creation violates copyright laws. Unfortunately this film was seen by far too few people, because it was actually a great concept and was worth the cost of a movie ticket or rental.
That being said, his idea is simply for the community you live in to make an amatuer video for you to enjoy. He documents how in his new book: “You’ll Like This Movie Because You’re In It: The Be Kind Rewind Protocall”. The film you make is not allowed to show up online. It is not allowed to gain corporate sponsorship. You’re not allowed to sell the film that you and the community you live in create. He wants people to avoid using technologies like cg. He says “Sometimes, I think technology is not a neccessity to be creative.” If you don’t have a camera he might even lend you one if you’ll convince him of all of the above. For more on that, visit his website. For more on the book and how this works click here.
