“Freaks of the Heartland” is a graphic novel written by Steve Niles and illustrated by Greg Ruth. You may recognize Steve Niles as the guy that wrote 30 Days of Night. I read “Freaks of the Heartland” last Winter and have been a fan of ever since. It tells the tragic story of a boy named Trevor that will do anything to save his younger brother, Will, a freak, from the injustices of society. The two find out that there are other freaks in Gristlewood Valley, the town where he lives and Trevor decides to leave with Will and rescue the other freaks before his dad kills his younger, much larger sibling. I don’t know how many of you have read it, but think of this as an odd sort of take on “Of Mice and Men”.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Freaks of the Heartland” will be getting adapted into a movie. David Gordon Green, director of “The Pineapple Express” is directing it. Green is producing it with Dark Horse Entertainment President Mike Richardson, who produced “30 Days of Night”. Overture Films, a production company focused primarily on horror, owns the rights to bring the graphic novel to the big screen. Some of their future projects are “The Crazies” as a re-invention of George Romero’s 1973 film and “Pandorum” which is shooting in Berlin currently, “Last Chance Harvey” and “Nothing Like the Holidays” are going to be released before the end of the year. With the right makeup and effects, this movie could truly be something amazing.
