Yesterday, I took a trip with a friend of mine to the Monroeville Mall in PA. If you are a horror fan, you would know that The Dawn of the Dead was filmed in the Monroeville Mall, and is also the location that Kevin Smith chose for his most recent film, Zack and Miri Make a Porno.
Yesterday was World Zombie Day, in which cities all over the U.S. participated in Zombie walks. As far as I know, Monroeville holds the world record for most people participating in the Zombie Walk. Last years record was 1,028 people, and a cast member from the original Dawn told me that they beat last years with over 1300 zombies. The walk took place at 10am, and we did not yet arrive at the mall, but we still got to see the aftermath. There were zombies everywhere and blood smeared around the mall. It was pretty cool.
They were also holding a free convention (The It’s Alive Show) inside of the mall that was loaded with Horror vendors and celebrities. The guests included:
Ken Foree – Peter Washington (Dawn of the Dead)
Joseph Pilato - Captain Rhodes (Day of the Dead)
Leonard Lies- Machete Zombie (Dawn of the Dead)
Clayton Hill- Zombie (Dawn of the Dead)
Sharon Ceccatti- Zombie Nurse (Dawn of the Dead)
Frank Serrao- Dawn of the Dead
Joe Shelby- Dawn of the Dead
It was a lot of fun, and everyone was really friendly. Leonard Lies (aka the Machete Zombie) posed for a good picture for me. Clayton Hill let me know how disugusting the McDonald’s food was that the event coordinators provided them with.

The convention was actually an added bonus that I didn’t even know was happening. The reason I wanted to go in the first place was for Monroeville Zombies, a new exhibit that was opened up this weekend inside of Toy Galaxy on the lower level of the mall.
Toy Galaxy itself is one of the greatest stores I have ever been in, they have toys from my childhood for sale still in boxes. It’s not even really that expensive, they sell comics, autographs, toys, shirts, and more. I actually bought a Malebolgia action figure from a series of Spawn that I always wanted when I was young. I remember it being hard to find, so I picked it up. They also had Cy-Gor 2, but the box was a little damaged, so I didn’t grab that one.
Anyhow, they opened an exhibit in the back of the store that is a nice little addition. They have diaramas of the mall from the Dawn set, really cool movie posters, props, and a casket ride to your grave simulator. It was three bucks and you laid in real casket while it simulated the darkness and sounds you would hear if you were being hauled to the cemetary while still alive. They had a night vision camera in there so people could see your face while you were laying in the dark coffin.
Here are some pictures from the event.

The zombie exhibit will be staying in Toy Galaxy for a while, so go check it out if you can. They have a dvd playing that has all kinds of information about the movies for you to watch, and if you are a child of the 80’s the toys there will really bring back some memories.
