First, I would like to thank Rick for donating a copy of DSK’s film, “Slashing Prices”, for our Halloween Contest, and also for taking some time to do this interview with me.
DSK is an independant film company out of Girard, Ohio. They are pretty well known around here for their horror/comedies and have been traveling the convention circuit trying to infiltrate the homes of horror fans all over.
Can you give us a brief history of DSK Productions?
Well, the easiest way to tell the history of DSK is basically a group of friends who one day went to a horror convention and found out you don’t need to be famous to make movies. So needless to say DSK was born.
Who or what inspires you in film?
George Romero, Lucio Fulci, are some directors that inspire me. Movies that inspire me are slashers from the 80’s (My Bloody Valentine, Friday the 13th, etc), gore movies (Violent Shit series), and monster movies.
What kind of budget are you working with, and how long does it usually take to shoot a film?
Our budget changes depending on what kind of movie were working on. But usually we don’t have a budget, I normally just spend whatever is needed to get it done. But the most we have spent was about $400. Currently we’re almost at that mark, we will probably go over.
What kind of problems have you run into while shooting?
We have run into many problems, haha. The biggest problem i would say was our first movie. We had a bunch of stuff shot, and then we parted with most of the crew. So we ended up calling up some friends to help us finish.
Have you teamed up with musicians to do soundtrack work on the films?
Yeah, we have. We use to use music from The Champions Of All Time and Wesker. The Champions broke up, but Jason West of the band still writes music for our movies. He actually writes music specifically for the movies now, which is really nice.
What is the most elaborate special effect that you have attempted?
We always go for elaborate special effects. But the most elaborate will probably be seen in our newest movie, Incest Bernie. I don’t want to give anything away. But in previous movies some elaborate effects were a zombie eating out a chick and showing a fake vagina, squeezing a head like a zit and have it explode out the top, beer bottle punched through the mouth and coming out the back of the head.
When it comes to writing/directing/editing, is it all you?
Directing is me for the most part, but everyone throws in their ideas. Editing is all me, i hate editing… its the part that drives me insane the most. Writing wise its all of DSK that helps, i come up with a general idea. And then we sit around throwing out ideas and then we form those ideas into a film.
Which of your films is your personal favorite?
I would either say Slashing Prices or Holy Shit…Zombies! I like slashers & I like zombie films, so its kinda hard to choose. Both are totally different movies though.
What can you tell us about your newest film “Incest Bernie”, and how is the production coming?
Incest Bernie is about a guy of the same name who lives in the woods. He kills whoever enters his forest. A group of boyscouts head out into the woods to learn about leadership and then they find out of the terror that is Incest Bernie that lives in the woods.
The movie is a backwoods slasher. We have many deaths planned that will be done in stages. Some deaths will be quick, while others will be like “What else can they possibly think of?”. I try to be creative with the deaths. And this will be the bloodiest DSK movie yet.
Production so far is going smoothly. We have a list of people who want to be involved which is awesome. It just sucks we have to pick and choose.
Were hoping to have filming wrapped up by mid-october to have it released sometime this winter.
