Church of the Red Museum blast through the glass with new record plans

Written by Gary S. Angelo / Posted in: ,

Formed in late 2004 from the ashes of the Columbus, Ohio Punk act Go Evol Shiki, Church of the Red Museum trade in fast angular guitars for high art, Nick Cave-esque story telling and sinister waltzes. They will be playing at Cedar’s Lounge on Saturday, August 1st 2009 with The Receivers and The Sewing Machine War. I had a phone interview with Church of the Red Museum’s drummer, Robby Coleman, about the future state of his Columbus Indie rock project and what everyone in the band is listening to currently. Robby Coleman comments, “In the band we are all influenced by different things. There are certain parts with everybody. Listening- wise, we all agree on Nick Cave, Pink Floyd, Tom Waits and Murder City Devils. Harry Houdini, Bob Dylan and Robyn Hood -type people in history who lived outside the law also influence us. Everyone else in the band comes from more of a Punk standpoint. I come from a country standpoint.”

Church of The Red Museum also had some lineup and musical style changes since there 2006 self titled debut on Manup Records. They just recently added Rosehips Guitarist Cassie Lewis. Coleman adds, “The previous material as compared with the newer material is like night and day. The previous material was all written and recorded in one day. It was so immediate. The new stuff is not as organ –driven as the last record. The last record sounded like a piece of glass or a sharp object coming straight out of your speaker, pointing at you. I want the new one to sound like a total explosion or a battalion. We started working on it a couple of weeks ago, its an ongoing process and we hope to have it done by the end of the year.” The members of Church of The Red Museum hope to make the new release about 10 or 11 tracks long. Coleman adds, “Several of the new songs we played at several shows. As far as recording and touring go, we definitely want to continue with this live. Lve is where we shine. There is no reason to stop til the final objective is reached. The new record is a birthing process right now, and we are very pregnant. We brought new guitarist Cassie Lewis in the band because she has brought fresh new blood in the band. We had some personnel questions in the band also.”

Cassie Lewis along with current Church of the Red Museum guitarist Tim Butler make a perfect guitar attack duo even though their influences clash greatly. Coleman concurs, “Lewis’ guitar tone is more thicker than Tom’s. Lewis comes from a Led Zeppelin guitar school and Tom Butler comes from a Black Flag guitar school. It is interesting hearing the two together.” On Saturday August 1, 2009 Church of The Red Museum will conquer the stage at Cedars Lounge with The Receiver and the Sewing Machine War.
