Do you know what “Tron” is? Let me refresh your memory. It was a 1982 film made by Disney starring Jeff The Dude Bridges. He played a programmer that ended up getting stuck in a computer world with light cycles and all kinds of cool things that people in 1982 had never seen before. Now people watch poor “Tron” and say “Wow…really? That kind of sucked. The special effects were horrible. The dialogue was cheesy. I could make a better looking movie on my home computer.” Growing up I liked “Tron” because I thought the possibility of going into a virtual world was cool. So when I saw the trailer for “TR2N” which had been “Tron.2”, Tron 2” and probably a slew of other bad names, filmed by this cell phone (I’m guessing) I was very excited…beware the quality is horrid.
Many of you have never seen “Tron” other than that clip. Many of you only know “Tron” as something odd that existed in the world of Kingdom Hearts 2. That’s okay. This is the original trailer for Tron…it’s nowhere near as grainy as the trailer filmed with the cellular device.
If you think that that seems kind of cool and you don’t mind movies with awesome 80s special effects, I suggest it. I’m willing to bet that you can find someone that has a VHS copy of “Tron”. If not, I’m sure a remastered DVD and a Blu-ray version with loads of special features will be coming out sometime over the next two years.
Disney, the company that produced “Tron” created a stir when they showed the same trailer on Friday that they showed last year at Comic Con. It wasn’t because fans were pissed off mind you, it was because they released the fact that the film would be released in 3d and handed everyone 3d glasses to watch the brand new trailer. They also unleashed the film’s new name and logo. The trailer that they saw is available on the very slow loading Quicktime, but I loathe that program, so I am giving you this link. Unfortunately, all embedding has been disabled…sorry. The idea of the movie being in 3d is ridiculously cool because it fits in with how gaming and the computer world has changed since the 80s.
Disney has also begun the single best act of a viral marketing campaign that I have ever seen. The film comes out in 2011. The movie deals with the disappearance of Flynn…there is a website called Flynn Lives and supposedly it has a massive Flynn believer following. They recreated his arcade for Comic Con and let people go in there on Thursday night.
This is a ridiculously long video of Flynn’s light cycle from “Tron: Legacy” that was at “Flynn’s Arcade”. I think that the design is amazing. That song in the background is one of the new songs that was created by the band doing the score for the film: Daft Punk.
One last video…inside of Flynn’s Arcade. I love how the song is “Don’t You Forget About Me”. It kind of makes me laugh seeing as how this is a sequel to a film that will have been released almost thirty years before it when it finally gets released.
