Video game Add-Ons: Are they cool, or just another rip off?

Written by Tom / Posted in: ,

I was absolutely against the idea of video game add-ons for a long time. I saw them as corporate greed and just another way to make video games suck. They were taking the things that we used to be able to earn in video games and selling them to gamers for $5.00 or more…CORPORATE PRICKS! Then I decided to actually go into the Playstation Store and saw that there were some original games in there. It wasn’t all just additional characters for fighting games such as “Soul Caliber” or extra songs for games like “Rock Band” or “Guitar Hero”.

I bought “Watchmen: The End is Nigh” and was pleased with it. It had great graphics for a ten dollar game and was extremely addicting. The gameplay was reminiscent of the game Final Fight from the early 90s. It was a great beat em’ up. After that I continued to look through the games and found out that my extremely well-reviewed game “Resident Evil 5” had an add-on. It was a Vs. Mode so that you could run around shooting people online. Technically this should have been with the other online material provided with the game, but I was so addicted to this game that I couldn’t resist…I was at a crossroads. What should I do? I sold out and bought it. It was also awesome. You can earn points toward things like infinite ammo for the bow and arrow with Shiva and a Gatling Gun with infinite ammo for Chris that you can use when you play through story mode. I still feel a bit bad about this $5.00 pick up.

Another one that I bought is called “Burn Zombie Burn!”. It is about a guy named Bruce that for lack of better way to describe it, is forced into killing zombies. There are three modes: Defend Daisy (he defends his girlfriend), Free for all (he can go wherever he wants in the level and kill zombies until he dies) and Timed (he has to collect time bonuses while killing zombies to keep the game going). The object is to get your score high enough to progress to the next map. Their are loads of different weapons: Uzi, shotgun, pistol, lawnmower and chainsaw just to name a few. The blood flows pretty heavily throughout the game just like in a zombie b-movie. He also has a lot of wisecracks like the character he’s based on: Bruce Campbell. It was another great buy. I’m looking forward to more in the future.

Marvel vs Capcom 2 will be available later this summer on Xbox Live’s Marketplace and Playstation Network’s Store and I’ll definitely be buying it…it will have an online vs mode added.

The Playstation Network’s Store and Xbox Live’s Marketplace are the places to go if you want to make your decision on add ons.
