MC Chris: The Floor is Lava Tour

Written by Justin / Posted in: ,

Over the years I have really been meaning to get out of the house to catch an MC Chris show, but for some reason I had never made it to one (including an incredible show he played with Gil Mantera’s Party Dream and Grand Buffet that I still kick myself for). When I heard he was going to be playing the Grog Shop with Jacksonville punk rockers, Whole Wheat Bread, I marked it on my calendar and made sure I’d be there.

I read online the show started at 8pm and we headed out early so that we could take a few laps around Beachwood Place. At around 8, we left the mall for the show, and once we got there it didn’t even start for another two hours. That was one whole hour of mall time that we could have spent checking out the hottest deals in stores like Sephora.

While waiting in the crowd at the Grog Shop for two hours, the humidity in the air began to rise from everyone’s sweaty bodies. It became real sticky and hot, and started to smell like fart. Imagine a crowded bar in which everyone farts at the same time, that’s pretty much what it smelled like for a while.

Whole Wheat Bread played first, and their set was great. I first heard of them a while back because they are signed to Fighting Records, the same label that Grand Buffet is under. I went to see them a few years ago at the House of Blues with Reel Big Fish and Streetlight Manifesto. Whole Wheat Bread consists of Aaron Abraham, Mr. Whitefolks, and Will Frazier. They were able to really pump the crowd up to the point of unnecessary moshing. Some songs I remember them playing were “Throw Your Sets Up”, “Old Man Sampson”, “Bombs Away”, and their version of “Never Scared”. They took some time out of their set to do two rap songs which were pretty great. Will Frazier mentioned how they just got back from touring over seas and drove straight from Orlando to Cleveland and were really tired. In order to not be so tired, they had to get crazy, so they proceeded to play Slayer’s “Raining Blood”. They had a tight set, and very entertaining. Their newest album is called “Hearts of Hoodlums”, you can also buy their other albums Punk Lifeand Minority Rules

Aaron Abraham, Lead vocals and guitar.

Mr. Whitefolks, drums.

Will Frazier, Bass and vocals.

MC Chris came out next. He rapped over beats that were pumping through the sound system coming from his laptop computer. The crowd was really into it, I didn’t think that everyone was going to know all the lyrics, but they did. I felt out of place. For some reason I can’t memorize lyrics like most people, so it’s hard for me to join hands with everyone at a concert and sing along with the bands. I feel like I am missing out on a concert ritual. Anyhow, he performed all of my favorites like “The Tussin”, “F’n Up My Christmas”, “Fette’s Vette”, “Pizza Butt”, and too many more to even remember. He talked about XBOX 360’s Left 4 Dead for a while. That was pretty funny, then he called some guy up on the stage because he was pushing people around. The guy went up on stage and thought he was real awesome, and MC Chris called him a jerk, a douchebag, and had him escorted out of the show. Pretty funny actually. Chris later verbally murdered some girls that were drunk and standing in front of him and made them take 10 steps back away from the stage because they were annoying. He wouldn’t rap again until they did.

The show was a lot of fun, and afterwards we realized how awesome the area is around the Grog Shop and how we should hang out their more often. I also realized that I’m not too happy about the removal of a really cool store called “Big Fun”. It seemed to be replaced with a Jimmy Johns. Big Fun was a store where you could buy old toys. Jimmy Johns is a sandwich place where you can get free smells. Go figure.

Clarification I was informed that Big Fun is still there. I am just a Big Idiot and didn’t see it.

  3. That’s awesome that he called the guy that was shoving everyone in the crowd and the annoying drunk girls out. I wish that more performers would do that.
