Jody Hill’s newest film “Observe and Report” starring: Seth Rogen, Ray Liotta, Michael Pena, Anna Faris and Patton Oswalt is a great comedy from Jody Hill. Jody Hill is the writer and director of the HBO TV show “Eastbound and Down” starring Danny McBride. If you’re familiar with the level of profanity on that show, this film may not shock you as much as it will shock the other people in the audience. The movie is very funny and possibly trumps “I Love You Man” as my favorite comedy so far this year. Another selling point is how odd it is. This film was like “Taxi Driver” meets comedy. I don’t know if I have ever seen a comedy that has made me feel sorry for the main character in one moment and then had a scene that made me laugh until I cried ten seconds later.
Ronnie Barnhart works at the Forrest Ridge Mall as the head of mall security. He takes his job very seriously but he wants to have the respect of an actual badge one day. When the mall is struck by a flasher and a thief he sees his big chance. He could finally nab the suspects and get the respect that he truly deserves. He might even get the attention of the makeup girl that can’t stand him, Brandi. This is all jeopardized when his boss calls the real police in because he doesn’t think Ronnie is up to the job. Ronnie organizes a task force to accomplish his mission. He assembles the most random group of security personnel ever put together. Will Ronnie rise to the occasion and outshine the “real” Detective Harrison or will he be cast into the shadows again?
The best part of this movie is that it doesn’t end the way that conventional wisdom says it will. Everything about it is messed up. It is a dirty film with drugs, sex, booze, guns, and foul language. If I could watch it again, I would in a heartbeat because I think that it is one of the most well thought out comedies in the past few years. The character development is phenomenal. Patten Oswalt in the role that he played (which I won’t ruin) was awesome. He’s a great jaded person. I’d love to see him get more film roles. Danny McBride’s role as “Caucasion Crackhead” (the actual credits listed him as this) was also well done.
I give this 3 out of 4 stars.

Nothing has gotten 4 out of 4. It’s the equivalent of saying you got a B pretty much. You really have to go the extra mile to get that A. It’s the best comedy this year, but not the best comedy I’ve ever seen.
Give me some examples of A movies.
I think that “Office Space” was great, “40 Year Old Virgin” was if you wanna go comedies. If you want dramas: “Saving Private Ryan”, “The Godfather Parts 1 and 2”, “The Last Samurai”. If you want Sci-Fi: “Jurassic Park”, “Terminator 2”. If you want horror: What I absolutely love are old horror movies. The old Bela Legosi stuff (“The Wolfman”, “Son of Frankenstein”. And the Christopher Lee movies(“Dracula A.D. 1972”, “Prince of Darkness”) are awesome, but I wouldn’t give those an A. I’d give Hitchcock’s “Rear Window” an A, “The Birds”, Romero’s “Night of the Living Dead”. Its use of satire is amazing. I also really like John Carpenter’s “The Thing”. I wasn’t a fan of “The Thing from Another World” though. (I guess some re-makes are better…but I bet there were people that hate remakes just like me that didn’t want him to make that one back then.)Is that enough?
I like how you go on to say how great this film is, and how it’s the best comedy so far this year but it still manages to get 3 out of 4 stars. You must be a tough grader.
