“Shadow of the Colossus“ is a game that was released in 2005 with a decently sized cult following, yet still when I heard that this was being turned into a film when I read Variety today I was a bit shocked. This game for Playstation 2 featured some of the most amazing graphics of its time upon release. It also had a great soundtrack and story. The visuals were astounding. It served as the unofficial prequel to another cult classic called “Ico”. The story revolves around a man named “Wanderer” traveling around a huge desert and having to kill sixteen gigantic monsters known simply as “The Colossi”. If he succeeds, his friend’s life will be restored. If he fails, darkness will overtake the earth. Talk about an epic fail.
Justin Marks, the person writing “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo” for Disney, “Suicide Squad” and “Green Arrow: Escape from Super Max” for DC and “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe” has been an extremely busy man. Kevin Mischer is in negotiations to produce the movie. His credits include the upcoming “Fighting” which looks like a champ, and “Public Enemies” about John Dillinger.
The Variety article says that they are going to try to build upon the game’s setting of a solitary world with few characters and the sixteen monsters. My biggest question is this: Why do they have to change that? Sometimes when it’s a one person against the odds story it’s scarier. If they can pull off the Monsters with wicked Cg (because yes…they will need some cg for this one) then this could truly be something amazing. Hopefully they don’t screw it up.
