So, “Terminator:Salvation”, a movie that is supposed to be the kick-start to a brand new, gigantic trilogy is rated PG-13? Awesome…weren’t all of the others rated R? “Oh Crap!” Or should another word be there? Is this just Hollywood pulling another “Die Hard 4” and giving us an edited version with some violence and bad language and then releasing an “extreme uncut version” to drive DVD sales, or is this the real deal? Will there be a bar underneath the PG-13 rating that says “For extreme science fiction action” reminiscent of the one underneath “The Dark Knight” that says “Intense Sequences of Violence and Some Menace”? Not a lot of menace viewers…just “some”.
Last summer, everyone marveled at the stuff that was put into “The Dark Knight” and asked “Can they do that in a PG-13 movie?” Maybe this won’t be such a bad thing. However, “The Batman” franchise isn’t “The Terminator” franchise. Even though they had a man showing a magic trick, in “The Terminator” films, bodies tend to pile up in large numbers…much larger than “The Dark Knight”. If this film is really supposed to be about a war, shouldn’t it be shown realistically, with blood and guts thrown everywhere? Apparently, Pizza Hut is the sponsor. I have never seen a movie that was rated R get a food company to sponsor them. However, I do remember the days when they used to market toys like “The Terminator” and “Aliens” action figures to kids at Toys R’ Us.
Pizza Hut has an official site with three trailers and the rating for all to see. The PG-13 tag is at the bottom of the page. If you click the terminators they explode. On May 11, they will have exclusive footage for everyone. I am in no way saying that a rating makes a film, but I believe that if you are going to change the rating just to get bigger box office numbers, you’re a moron. This movie is going to make cash even if it’s horrible. They guaranteed that the minute that they signed Christian Bale to be John Connor and got every geek collectively excited.
Here’s the trailer that got me really looking forward to May, 22. The trailer even has an awesome Nine Inch Nails song.
This brings me to one last point…hopefully this movie isn’t mass produced to the point where they give a “Terminator” film a soundtrack other than the normal background music. It just wouldn’t seem right to have a hard rock soundtrack blaring through “Terminator” to drive sales.
On a brighter note, if the movie sucks at least the 1st-8th graders will have a cool Book-It theme this year…and hey, they can even get admission to the movie as a reward for reading 500 books!

A PG-13 rating won’t really affect Terminator in any way because T2 and T3 didn’t even seem like rated-R movies in the first place.
