A group of photographers, angels & ghosts consists of Van Vaerenbergh and Ben van Alboom. Their subject: electronic musicians. Spanning a wide range of electronic music genres, the photographers seek to capture these musicians in the same atmosphere and setting that surrounds black and white Jazz photography. And they do an excellent job of it. Their web-site features a sampling of the black and white photos, as well as an interesting “making-of” section that features shots from the photo session in color.
“on a cold night in january 2007 wouter van vaerenbergh and ben van alboom embarked on a mission – to make a photographic black & white series on electronic musicians. what started out as a see-what-happens-endeavor quickly turned into a right-let’s-cancel-our-holiday-plans-and-get-a-move-on-it-kinda-thing. twenty years, as many myspaces, a facebook group, a facebook page and (as of november 2008) also a website later we have already shot over three hundred musicians – stretching all six continents (not counting antarctica for obvious reasons) and several electronic genres. our objective has remained the same: in a highly digital world where every artist on any given club night gets photographed by hundreds of mobile phones with built-in cameras, we want to take them out of the clubs and place them in front of a vintage celluloid nikon camera – give them the same treatment as those jazz legends (who incidentally also started out in dark and sweaty clubs, infusing the world with sounds no-one had ever heard of). we’ll probably continue working on the project for the next few years, posting a couple of new photographs on our website (and myspace and facebook) every once in a while to keep you up-to-date and show you how we’re doing. rest assured: there’s more to come. lots!” – from angels-ghosts.com
