According to Variety, Jackie Earle Haley a.k.a. Rorshach in “Watchmen”, will be playing Freddy Krueger in New Line and Platinum Dunes re-imagining of the “Nightmare on Elm Street Franchise”. Samuel Bayer is directing the film, which comes from a script written by Wesley Strick. It starts filming next month in Chicago if you’re planning to swarm the set in one collective fan base and post a “Please don’t make this movie without Robert Englund as Freddy” strike.
It’s amazing to me that New Line would fathom replacing the iconic and fan-favorite Robert Englund as Freddy. He had portrayed the character of the janitor/child killer that is murdered and comes back to kill the teenagers in their dreams since 1984. Before the release of the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, “Nightmare on Elm Street” was New Line’s most profitable film series. It spawned eight sequels and two TV series. His age may have lead to his being ousted from the role, as may have the need to refresh the series. Freddy had gone from being a scary killer to being a comedian that stabs teens now and again.
Apparently the studios wanted to go back to the idea of a scary Freddy Krueger. I like Jackie Earle Haley and I think he did an amazing job as Rorshach, so I’m not against him being cast in the role, I just think the latest horror remakes have been crap. Thank God it’s not the original actor that was rumored for the role: Billy Bob Thorton. Though somehow I do think it would be terrifying to see main character from “Slingblade”, Karl, killing people in their sleep.
One last salute to the Freddy we know for now:

Haley looks like a bald Chad Kroeger. They should have had Chad Kroeger play him.
